Australia’s Fuel Prices Are Rising Again

Australian motorists are once again facing growing pressure at the bowser, as renewed conflict in the Middle East pushes global oil prices higher and Australia’s temporary fuel-tax relief comes to an end.

Fuel prices have already begun climbing. In late July, the national average price of unleaded 91 reached approximately $1.94 per litre, while diesel averaged around $2.30 per litre. Now another major change is arriving.

The Australian Government’s remaining 16-cent-per-litre fuel excise reduction ends on 2 August, restoring the full excise burden on petrol and diesel. While the increase may take time to flow through individual service stations, motorists are expected to face additional upward pressure on prices at the bowser.

This follows the much more severe fuel crisis experienced earlier in 2026, when international conflict sent Australian petrol prices soaring and created major concerns around fuel availability.
